Chapter 3 Welfare for Children with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities

The number of registered persons with intellectual disabilities in Akita prefecture was 1,506 as of August, 2004. This represents an increase of 45 people, or 3.1%, compared to the preceding year. It is noteworthy that this represents an increase of 1.3%, or 20 people, compared with the fiscal year 1989 (1,486 persons). When this figure is broken down according to degree of severity, the ratio of persons with a mild to moderate degree of disability is 57.3% (863 people), the ratio of people with severe or profoundly severe disability is 27.3% (411 people), and the ratio of persons with severe intellectual and physical disabilities is 15.4% (232 persons).
