The number of persons with intellectual disabilities in Akita prefecture was 5,978 as of August 1, 2004, an increase of 2.8%, or 164 people, compared to the preceding year. Moreover, this represents an increase of 19.7%, or 100 people, compared to fiscal year 1992 (4,993 persons). When this figure is broken down according to degree of severity, the ratio of persons with a mild and moderate degree of Disabilities is 45.4% (2,716 people), the ratio of persons with severe or profoundly severe disabilities is 49.4% (2,955 people), and the ratio of persons with severe intellectual and physical disabilities is 5.1% (307 persons). Overall, the degree of severity is rising.
